What's on your doorstep and beyond

History - must see sights a few minutes walk from Kirkwall Apartments

All apartments are only a few minutes walk away from Kirkwall's central attractions. The name Kirkwall comes from the Norse “Kirkjuvagr” meaning “Church Bay”. At the heart of Kirkwall you cannot miss the magnificent Norse Cathedral of Saint Magnus. Founded over 900 years ago, this beautiful medieval building remains at the centre of the town. Adjacent to the Cathedral is the Watergate where you’ll find the 12th century Bishop’s Palace and the Earl’s Palace built in the early 17th century. Both provide a fascinating insight into Orkney’s Viking past.

On Broad Street you’ll find Tankerness House and Tankerness House Gardens. This is the home of the Orkney Museum (free entry) which tells the story of Orkney; beginning in the Stone Age, continuing through the times of the Picts and the Vikings to the present day. There are also changing temporary exhibitions. Walk through the arched gateway built in 1574 to immerse yourself in Orkney’s heritage!

Local Shops, Eating & Drinking

Kirkwall has a huge variety of excellent local shops. There is something for everyone including local artwork, hand crafted jewellery, knitwear, pottery and much more. You'll find world famous whiskies, world class beers, cheese and exquisite chocolates amongst many other types of local produce.

There's also a great selection of places to eat and drink in Kirkwall, whether you’re looking for coffee and cake, a bar meal washed down with locally brewed beer or a gastronomic dining experience.

In every apartment you'll find our own Kirkwalll Essentials guide with details of the best (in our opinion!) places to shop, eat and drink.
